Jane Jefferson is a 40-year-old female with cardiac arrhythmia who was awarded SSDI benefits. She worked as a cashier in a home goods store from 2001 to 2004. Prior to that time she worked in customer service at a clothing store from 1997 to 2000. Ms. Jefferson suffers from recurrent cardiac arrhythmias, with Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia. In addition to her heart conditions she suffers from migraines and headaches, lumbar facet changes, asthma, gastritis, hypertension and high cholesterol, thyroid enlargement, obesity, depression, and anxiety. Additionally, Ms. Jefferson suffers from Chiari Malformation.
Ms. Jefferson had EP (electrophysiology) testing and had two ablations in June 2004 and June 2005, and a third ablation in April 2010. The April 2010 EP study with RF ablation for chest pain and shortness of breath showed by monitor one episode of non-reproducible atrial tachycardia. Jane Jefferson filed an application with the Social Security Administration to obtain disability benefits. Her initial application was denied as well as her request for reconsideration. Attorney Good outlined to the Administrative Law Judge that Ms. Jefferson suffers from recurrent cardiac arrhythmia with Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia, an abnormal fast heart rhythm originating in the atria. This condition causes recurrent chest pain, palpitations, pounding, shortness of breath, rapid breathing, dizziness, and arm pain. Attorney Good further described Ms. Jefferson’s condition and ailments. She suffers from frequent migraines and headaches. These headaches can sometimes last five days or more with right-sided pain and numbness. As a result she has photophobia and phonophobia. Attorney Good explained that Ms. Jefferson’s headaches are so severe that she has that she has dizziness and nausea that leads to vomiting and causes her to see spots. They are debilitating for her.
Attorney Good also explained that Ms. Jefferson also has spinal disorders. A March 2008 MRI showed progression of degenerative changes at L4-5 and L5-S1, L4-5 diffuse posterior disk bulge with atrophy. As a result she must stay in bed when it gets inflamed. Her ability to ambulate is severely compromised. Ms. Jefferson also has asthma that is so severe it required ten to twelve hospitalizations. Ms. Jefferson suffers from depressive syndrome and panic attacks to the point that it interferes with daily life and social functions. The physical disabilities in tandem with the mental impairments not only made any vocational pursuits impracticable for Jane Jefferson they made daily activities and social functions unrealistic.
The Social Security Administration awarded Jane Jefferson Social Security benefits. They ruled that Ms. Jefferson was not able to perform her past relevant work. A combination of her physical and mental disabilities impeded her ability to do all work.
